What are highlights in a photo?

Highlights are where the light is being reflected back to camera. Usually on metal and glossy surfaces, But under the right circumstances most materials can have a highlight. You could also describe highlights as the bright parts of the photo. Of course a picture of the sun wouldn't be called a highlight, thats why I say where light reflects back off shiny things and whatnot. What are highlights in a photo?

The shadow areas are basically black.

A perfectly exposed image will have detail in both the highlights and shadow areaWhat are highlights in a photo?
